Robert Peston delivers Ebor Lecture in York Minster
The BBC’s Business Editor and Royal Television Society’s Journalist of the Year 2008, Robert Peston, gave an insight into the global financial crisis when he addressed an audience of around 1300 in York Minster on 10 February as part of the current Ebor Lecture series. Recently named as the most highly rated business journalist in the UK, the title of his lecture was “What Have We Learned from the Worst Financial and Economic Crisis since the 1930s?”

Avoiding much of the technical jargon often associated with such discussion, he outlined the causes of the current crisis and suggested some steps that might be taken to prevent a regular recurrence of such difficulties. He advocated an end to the arrogance and complacency often shown by the highest earners in the financial sector, and their ‘reintegration into society’ with a new sense of accountability. Mr Peston also encouraged the development of more democratic and transparent systems for economic decision-making and financial monitoring.
The next lecture will be given by the Rt Hon Tony Benn; tickets can be requested here. Professor Sebastian Kim of York St John University and a member of the organising committee said, “The Ebor Lectures were established in 2006 in response to the growing need for the church to engage with public issues in the wider community. They are aimed at promoting debate on subjects such as the credit crisis which affect everyone. The time has come when we need to question our values in business dealings as well as in our personal lives.” The lectures are sponsored by York Institute for Community Theology, York St John University, York Minister, the Order of Carmelites, and the Churches Regional Commission for Yorkshire and the Humber.
