What is the course about?
A Foundation Degree is a qualification that seeks to integrate academic skills with work and placement-based learning. It has a vocational focus and equips learners with skills and knowledge relevant to future employment.
The programme begins at Level 1, which is equivalent to a first-year undergraduate course. On successful completion of Level 1, you can opt to be awarded the Certificate in Higher Education in Theology and Ministry. Level 2 is equivalent to a second-year undergraduate course. Successful completion of Level 2 leads to the award of Foundation Degree.
The entire programme usually takes four years part-time to complete. The programme consists of 12 modules (six at Level 1 and six at Level 2), each worth 20 credits. Some modules include practical experience and placement opportunities. The modules cover a variety of subjects and skills, for example: biblical studies, Christian mission, spirituality, worship, ethics, multi-faith issues, preaching and teaching skills, and pastoral theology and its practical application.
Who is the course run by?
The Foundation Degree is validated by York St John University.
Who is the course leader?
Louise Redshaw is Head of the Foundation Degree programme.
How much will it cost?
The fees for each module are £110 (2009-10) and will be raised to £115 the following academic year.

Review:
I left school in 1967 with not much in the way of qualifications. I have been involved in my local church for many years and really wanted to understand more about my faith and learn how I could be more useful in my community.
I signed up for the Foundation Degree, but really didn’t think I would be able to cope with the studying and essay writing. I was very surprised on the first night to find a real mix of people including many of my age who had not written an essay for over 30 years!
I can say that the tutors really work hard to enable everyone to get the most from the course and there is a great feeling of fellowship among the students.
I didn’t realise how varied the work would be and I have particularly enjoyed working with other students to lead the group in a discussion. I never thought I had it in me!
